Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is outplacement?
Outplacement originated in America and is the collective term to describe a package of services given to people who are leaving an organisation. We feel that a better description is the practical help, advice and support given by independent specialists designed to help you get through the shock and worry of redundancy and get you back into employment as soon as possible. This can often include a change of career direction and New Horizons can advise and support you through all the stages of the process. Find out more about New Horizons' Outplacement Services
Q. How do I prepare a CV?
At New Horizons we have experienced consultants who provide individual, confidential advice and help on career matters. They will help you prepare and produce a quality CV which will promote your skills, experience and achievements and illustrate your potential to employers. Our consultants can also advise you on how to improve an existing CV, if necessary. They will work closely with you - either face-to-face or on-line - to ensure your CV is effective and professionally presented.

Q. Will my age be a disadvantage?
Age equals experience, maturity and, often, loyalty to previous employers. Utilising our methods, our candidates have found age to be an advantage when competing against younger people. We have been very successful in helping people in their 40s, 50s and 60s secure worthwhile employment - often with increased responsibilities, better career prospects and improved salaries!

Q. I have not had an interview for years. How will I cope?
New Horizons offers interview techniques as a standard feature of our Outplacement programmes and also as a separate 'stand-alone' service. We can help you prepare for those difficult interview questions, awkward interviewers and cope with nervousness, while making a positive, confident impression.

Q. Who can I turn to?
Most people need a boost to their confidence after a redundancy which, in turn, gives them the confidence to go out into the job market and do themselves justice. This initial practical help and the on-going support which we provide does make a huge difference. There is always a consultant available during normal office hours and special arrangements can be made for out-of-hours consultations in exceptional circumstances.
