Case Study Three – A Junior Manager

Junior managers often find themselves in a very difficult position.  They still hold many of the specialist skills that got them promoted in the first place but may not have enough people management experience to give them the confidence to go for a bigger job.

Our role in New Horizons is to help these junior managers plan their career path as well as help them through the short term redundancy issue. Many are unsure of their next move; should they go for a lesser job and fall back on their specialisation or try for that next management position.

Some corporate clients want us to help these junior managers through our basic programme, four sessions working on a one-to-one basis with one of our team of Consultants.  The first session is usually a mixture of getting to know you, building a CV and as we work through their CV we ask lots of questions and dig deep to find out what they really want to do next.  The second session involves more in depth discussions about their likes and dislikes, where they want to go next and as a result the development of a job search strategy.  The third session involves self marketing issues, adjustment to their CV if needed and interview preparation. 

The fourth session is much more open.
For some it is more help with interviews or presentations; for others it is reviewing their job search or looking at other options that have arisen
as a result of their networking.

Other corporate clients ask us to provide a more comprehensive service.  Here we include ‘values and needs': a diagnostic tool to determine whether they are in the right type of work and which helps them to review potential jobs.  We might assist with identifying suitable recruitment agencies, discuss psychometrics tests, prepare for assessment centres and help with application forms.  This service is much more bespoke and is centred on the needs of the individual.

With new horizons interactive, we now offer a further comprehensive online programme which is ideally suited for junior managers. But most of all, our programmes are based upon us listening, advising, assisting and developing the thoughts of the junior managers to help them take the next step on their career ladder.
